Green economy principles: changing business models to lower footprints

The application of green economy principles to have sustainable consumption aims at the sustainable production of goods and services by market actors. Transition to a low-carbon economy will bring more efficient resource use. Biodiversity, animal population, renewable and non-renewable resources, flora and fauna form part of the natural capital. Green economy means investing in sustaining that natural capital, while fulfilling our consumption needs.

Greening the economy not only generates growth, especially in terms of natural capital, but also means higher growth of GDP and per capita GDP. A green economy values and invests in natural capital. A green economy helps alleviate poverty in different ways. New jobs will be created that will make up loss of employment associated with business as usual. Creative destruction explains the change, when new ways make old models obsolete. Green economy is a framework that brings together natural, cultural and economic resources in order to have an integrated model that generates return on investment, assuring a natural capital for future generations.  Requires designing and implementing good practices. The impact of the application of green economy principles can explain the flourish of models, such as the circular economy, mass production of solar technology and others, so our consumption patterns become lighter, with lower footprints.

In my experience, changing business models to lower the pressure on natural resources or to better respond to the communities' needs is only the beginning, we now see new industries to satisfy needs in a different way, becoming a change agent in itself, the new paradigm is the connection between flexibility and inclusion, these two concepts are changing the ways we produce and consume.

To change the way, we produce and consume was the aim of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992. Twenty years later we saw the emergence of new patterns in Rio+20, and since 2012 the change is escalating and we see new entrepreneurs coming up with new ways to satisfy our consumption needs. Green economy principles, the way to a sustainable future.
